Like the GIFT procedure, the eggs and sperm are mixed in a lab, but with the zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT), confirmation that the eggs are fertilized is done before surgically placing them in the fallopian tubes.
Possible Side Effects:
– Similar to GIFT but with a longer lab time.
– Some general discomfort from the anesthesia.
– Sometimes done with the concurrent use of fertility drugs which can cause Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS) and increases the risk of having multiples.
Costs:
– In the US it can range from $8,000 to $15,000 (plus the costs of the fertility drugs).
