Adult Stem Cells Could Help Thwart Amputations

A recent study published in the journal Diabetes (the official journal of the American Diabetes Association) has shown promising results in the treatment of diabetic wounds such as food ulcers, one of the primary causes of amputation, through the use of adult stem cells.

The study, from the National University of Ireland, Galway, appeared in Diabetes, the American Diabetes Association’s official journal. Its research revealed that the use of adult stem cells has shown promising results in the treatment of diabetic wounds such as food ulcers, one of the primary causes of amputation.

Diabetics have a reduced ability to heal wounds, particularly with foot wounds, because their blood vessels have lost normal function. Foot wounds affect nearly 25 percent of diabetics at some point in their life with many eventually needing amputations.

This study, from the National University of Ireland, Galway, investigated a type of stem cell, known as the mesenchymal stem cell (MSC). They found that when these MSCs were coupled with a collagen biomaterial, there was increased wound healing.

The study was led by Dr. Aonghus O’Loughlin of Molecular Medicine Ireland and Professor Timothy O’Brien of the Regenerative Medicine Institute at National University of Ireland Galway and Galway University Hospitals. Its results have allowed the team to apply for-and receive-funding for human testing.

Professor Timothy O’Brien of the Regenerative Medicine Institute at National University of Ireland Galway and Galway University Hospitals and one of the co-leads in this study stated that “”MSC’s have many attractive therapeutic properties. They can be isolated from adults and are easy to grow in the laboratory.” Additionally, what make them special in this case is that “they release special factors that can help new blood vessels to grow. Increasing blood flow is a key step in wound healing.”

In summary, this new stem cell research has taken a step towards preventing amputations in people with diabetes.
